Sergey Sholom is CEO of game developers Datcroft and VP of business development at GameCredits Inc, the organisation behind the gamecredits cryptocurrency (GAME). Sergey founded Datcroft in 2004 and built the company into a worldwide success with millions of users. Here, he talks about his interest in cryptocurrencies and the opportunities offered by integrating gamecredits into Datcroft’s suite of games – including its flagship title Fragoria, an MMO with 8 million players.
How and when did you first become interested in cryptocurrency?
Three years ago I heard about bitcoin and found it interesting, but as often happens I had no time to investigate it more. I was busy with my gaming company and developing another company geared around a platform of mobile stores.
When did you realise that it was the ideal solution for moving money around the gaming economy?
I don’t want to say that it was me who was blessed with this idea. Datcroft Games’ team consists of so many talented people and together with GameCredits team we discussed over and over how we could make this an even better solution than was planned by GameCredits at the start. Regular brainstorming inside of a talented team based on many years of experience is the key to brilliant ideas.
What do you see as the single biggest benefit to the use of crypto within the gaming industry?
There are a number of benefits. I cannot select just one. They are all so important and work together so well. The most important in my eyes are anonymity, security, and unlimited deposits.
Why did you decide to use gamecredits, rather than bitcoin or a whole new custom blockchain of your own?
Bitcoin is too hardcore and has its own reputation – sometimes that’s not good and could reflect poorly on us. We have no right to take that risk when we are aiming to deliver a mainstream solution. A new blockchain? No. The thing is that we are a real business that came to cryptocurrency to create a solution. That’s why, along with the other advantages, it was best to select and work with GameCredits, which has its own crypto and has been mined for more than two years. If we created a new coin it would just look like another ICO. We do not want this appearance. We are real. We are different.
What are the major challenges to gamecredits integration into Fragoria? For example, do you anticipate any regulatory issues and how will you mitigate these?
Nothing is new over here and we will face the same issues as any other crypto. There’s a lot of work ahead, but right now there’s really nothing to say about it. There are no immediate challenges. We know what we are doing.
